ACCESSIBLE GUIDE TO THE DISABILITY DISCRIMINATION ACT

A free, user-friendly guide to help business understand and meet their obligations under the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) has been launched by Configure, the UK’s leading access provider.

The Guide to Accessibility has been designed to give companies an insight into the access auditing process, demonstrating that there is far more to consider than just lifts and ramps. With wheelchair users making up only three per cent of disabled people in the UK, it is just as important to improve access for the millions of people with visual impairments, difficulty hearing or reduced mobility.

The 48-page guide helps readers to understand the DDA as well as offering advice on how to carry out an access audit, modify premises and provide disability equality training to members of staff. It is illustrated with colourful pictures and diagrams and gives practical examples of good practice.

The DDA often leads to confusion as the legislation does not specify and set actions. Instead it places an obligation upon companies to make ‘reasonable adjustments’ and pursue ‘good practice’, such as that set down in the handbook. Businesses that can demonstrate they have done so will have the best defence against any claim of discrimination.
